Slovak – Icelandic cooperation in development of small cultural centers

About the project Slovak-Icelandic cooperation SLICE

OZ Povala implements a project supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants. The project entitled Slovak – Icelandic cooperation in development of small cultural centers – SLICE, will bring cultural activities to young people, seniors and excluded communities, which, despite the growing interest in culture in Banská Štiavnica, are not traditional target audiences of cultural events. At the same time, it will support the functioning of the Art Cafe cultural center, which has been operating for 22 years, by partially financing its permanent activities and exchanging experiences with the cultural center in Iceland. Thematically, Art Cafe’s cultural activities will focus on the involvement of the local Roma minority, the values of freedom, democracy, anti-discrimination, and general political and civil rights.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT INFORMATION

The EEA Grants represent the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway towards a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.

There are two overall objectives: reduction of economic and social disparities in Europe, and to strengthen bilateral relations between the donor countries and 15 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltics.

The three donor countries cooperate closely with the EU through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA). The donors have provided €3.3 billion through consecutive grant schemes between 1994 and 2014. For the period 2014-2021, the EEA Grants amount to €1.55 billion. The priorities for this period are:

  1. Innovation, Research, Education and Competitiveness
  2. Social Inclusion, Youth Employment and Poverty Reduction
  3. Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Low Carbon Economy
  4. Culture, Civil Society, Good Governance and Fundamental Rights
  5. Justice and Home Affairs

The EEA Grants are jointly financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, whose contributions are based on their GDP.

Eligibility for the Grants mirror the criteria set for the EU Cohesion Fund aimed at member countries where the Gross National Income (GNI) per inhabitant is less than 90% of the EU average.

All projects are co-financed by the State Budget of the Slovak Republic in the amount of 15%.

Main Activities

4th edition of the SLovO aleBO huDbA festival

Festival SLovO aleBO huDbA (SLOBODA means FREEDOM) is an “underground and a dissident” festival dedicated to the life and art of free people in the former regime, during the so called “normalization”, a period covering years between the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968 to the Velvet revolution in 1989. The previous, third year of the festival, focused on ecological movements emerging at the time of “normalization” (in the 70s – 80s) and ecology on the independent art scene. The 4th year of the festival in 2021 will build on previous years. Details of the program are prepared by the program festival board.

Spolu Šobov Festival

Festival Spolu Šobov (Šobov Together) will return to Štiavnica after 10 years. The main aim of this activity is to create a standard festival bearing the signs of openness, security and attractiveness for all communities. This festival, which traditionally takes place at the segregated settlement of Šobov where part of the local Roma minority lives, will offer the possibility of friendly meetings and spontaneous interaction of both communities (majority and minority).

Cultural exchange between Slovakia and Iceland

We will organize 4 performances of Slovak and Icelandic female artists. Dance performances by Sona Ferienčíková and BOD.Y “Everywhen” and a concert by Katarína Malíková in Reyjkavík, and two leading Icelandic singers, Sóley and JFDR, who will arrive from distant Iceland to Štiavnica.

A series of events at the Art Cafe aimed at combating extremism and intolerance

This activity will include at least 10 thematic events aimed at combating extremism and intolerance and organized throughout the project:

  • Concerts
  • Discussions about antisemitism, hate speech online and extremism with renowned experts
  • Artist exhibition organized with visual artists
  • Multicultural brunch with foreign cook living in Banská Štiavnica
  • A theatre play against extremism
  • and much more..
